A Day in the Life of Kindergarten

When you step into our school, one of the first things you'll notice is the vibrant energy and enthusiasm of our young learners in kindergarten. From the moment they arrive, these children are eager to learn, explore, and play, and they approach each new activity with a sense of wonder and curiosity.

On a typical day in Mrs. Thurman's kindergarten class at Mosaic Elementary, students follow a carefully crafted schedule that provides a balance of structured learning activities and free play time. At the start of the day, the students gather together for Morning Meeting. This is a time for them to greet one another, view our school news show, and set the tone for the day ahead. They may sing songs, participate in group games, or engage in discussions about topics that interest them. This morning, students had opportunity to share their thoughts during a game of "Would You Rather?"

Next, the students move on to their Language Arts block. During this time, they work on developing their reading and writing skills through a variety of activities. They might practice letter recognition, sound out new words, or work on writing sentences or stories. The classroom teacher and assistants provide individualized support to students as needed, and small group activities may be organized to promote collaboration and peer learning. Today the students started the block by listening to Mrs. Thurman read a book about the life cycle of plants, which ties into the science curriculum!

This year all of our students in kindergarten have a school-issued iPad - we love developing our language skills through Lexia, one of our digital learning platforms!

After enjoying lunch and recess, the students head to music class. Here they have the opportunity to explore different types of music, learn about rhythm and melody, and express themselves through singing and movement. They may also be introduced to different musical instruments and learn how to create simple rhythms and melodies of their own. Today our students are working on adding simple body percussion (clapping, stomping, patting, and snapping) to their hello song!

After music it's on to PE. During this time, students engage in a variety of activities that help develop their gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and overall physical fitness. They may play games, run relays, or practice simple yoga or stretching exercises. Today the students are using the scooters to play a game about making healthy food choices!

One of the highlights of the day for many kindergarteners is free choice play time. During this period, they have the opportunity to explore different areas of the classroom, engage in imaginative play with peers, or work on individual projects that spark their curiosity.

Finally, our kindergarten class ends the day with an extra recess - a time to run, jump, climb, and play outside with friends. The students enjoy the chance to get some fresh air and exercise, and they return to the classroom ready to wind down and prepare for dismissal.

Overall, a day in the life of a kindergartener at Mosaic Elementary School is a busy, exciting, and rewarding experience for both students and teachers. By providing a balance of structured learning activities and free play time, our teachers and staff help young learners develop a love of learning and a sense of independence that will last through the rest of their time at Mosaic...and beyond!
