The Journey to Mosaic Elementary School
On February 18, 2021, the Fairfax County School Board voted to change the name of Mosby Woods Elementary School to Mosaic Elementary School. The name change went into effect on July 1, 2021.
The name change process was initiated by the Fairfax County School Board in June 2020. On October 8, 2020, FCPS Superintendent Brabrand brought forward his recommendations to the School Board on new names for our school. His recommendations included the following: Katherine Johnson, Five Oaks, Mary McBride, Barbara Rose Johns, and Mosaic. Later in the fall, public input was collected at two community meetings and a public hearing. Many sixth graders liked the name Mosaic because they felt it was a metaphor for our school:
“We are all different cultures and then when we are put together, we are a beautiful picture where we all belong. In a mosaic, every tile is different, but we celebrate unity.”
We look forward to celebrating our new name in the coming year and the upcoming renovation of our school.
