Author Visits Inspire Young Readers and Writers
The students at Mosaic Elementary School recently had the privilege of meeting two talented authors, Shawn Peters and Laura Renauld. Both authors brought their unique styles and experiences to their presentations, inspiring students to explore their own creativity and love for reading and writing.
Shawn Peters, author of The Unforgettable Logan Foster, presented a dynamic and interactive session titled “You Are The Hero of Your Own Story” to our 5th and 6th Grade students. With two separate readings from his book and an improvised superhero story based on students' own suggestions, the audience was transported to a world of adventure and imagination. The sound effects added by the audience made the experience even more immersive and fun.
Laura Renauld, author of Fred’s Big Feelings and Doe’s Dandelions, took students in grades K-4 on “A Writer’s Journey.” Her engaging presentation highlighted the writing process, from ideas and story maps to drafts and revisions. Drawing on her experience as an elementary teacher, she emphasized the importance of preparation and research in writing, just as one would prepare for a road trip.
Laura brought a suitcase to demonstrate how writers pack their “tools” to embark on their writing journeys. She encouraged students to think about their own stories and to take inspiration from their own experiences and emotions.
Thanks to the support of our wonderful PTA, our school and classroom libraries have been supplied with signed copies of Shawn's and Laura's books. Some of our students have already started reading them! Both of our visiting authors left a lasting impression on our students. Their presentations were not only entertaining and educational, but also served as a reminder of the power of reading and writing to transport us to new worlds and inspire us to be the heroes of our own stories.
