Month of the Military Child Spirit Week

April is designated as the Month of the Military Child and is a time to honor the sacrifices made by military families world-wide, with an emphasis on the experiences of military dependent children.

At Mosaic ES, we will recognize both our government and military-connected students through our Purple Up Day, which will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 20 during our Month of the Military Child Spirit Week April 18-22. “Purple Up! For Military Kids” is a day for communities to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple indicates that all branches of the military are supported; Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, Coast Guard blue, and Space Force dark blue all thought to combine together as a single color, purple.

Spirit Week

Monday, 04/18: Pajama Day (We sleep soundly because of those who protect our nation)

Tuesday, 04/19: Crazy Camo Day (Wear camouflage)

Wednesday, 04/20: Purple Up Day (Wear purple to show your support for military-connected families)

Thursday, 04/21: Career Day (There are so many careers to explore in the military)

Friday, 04/22: Red Friday (Wear red to Remember Everyone Deployed)

PTA Meeting Guest Speaker

Join us - whether or not you are a member of the PTA - at our next PTA meeting on Tuesday, April 19th at 6:30 PM where we will feature Carylee Carrington, a local author.

Caryless has authored two books, “Everyone, Just Like Me” and “Pretty Hair”. One of her main goals as an author is to encourage children to embrace their differences to understand that everyone is unique in their own special way.

Carylee will present on the following “When one hears diversity, we usually may be quick to think race. Diversity, is much more than the color of our skin or even the differentiation of cultures. Diversity is all around us. In many ways we have bridged the gap, though in 2022 there is still a wide diversity gap in the area of children's literature. As a mother and children's author, I hope to help build that bridge, one book at a time.”

This meeting is virtual via Zoom.

Make sure and save the date for this can’t-miss event!

Kindergarten Orientation  Do you have a child that will be attending kindergarten at Mosaic ES this fall?*

We are having a parent only Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, April 20 at 4:15 pm in our school cafeteria. The orientation is an opportunity to meet our principal, Dr. Mahri Aste, and our two assistant principals, Dr. Jenny Smith and Mr. Mike King, who will provide an overview of the Kindergarten program. Also on the agenda are our school counselor, the parent liaison, and the public health nurse. Additionally, the PTA will have a representative there to provide more information about how you can get involved. Please complete this form by April 19 to RSVP to the event. If you cannot make it to the orientation, we will be posting a recording of the meeting on the Mosaic ES website after the meeting.

*If you have a neighbor that has a child that will be attending kindergarten at Mosaic ES this fall, please share this information with them.

Social Media TestDrive

Like a driving simulator for young people learning to drive a car for the first time, Social Media TestDrive provides a simulated experience of realistic digital dilemmas and scenarios, along with key concepts and strategies for navigating them.

Take your children on a “Test Drive” for social media

Social Media TestDrive modules are designed so that youth can complete them by themselves, but we encourage parents to try out and discuss Social Media TestDrive with their children.

Digital Citizenship Tips and Advice for Families

Help Kids Post, Comment, and Upload Responsibly

"As soon as you share the first photo of your kid, you're establishing their digital footprint. As kids get older and start creating their own content or engaging with others online, it's important for them to understand the tracks they're leaving behind and what those tracks might reveal. Parents can help guide kids toward creating the kind of footprint they can be proud of."

More Information

ELP I centers around the individual needs of each student. During the program, students brainstorm and design a unique roadmap for their professional and personal goals in the Vision for Life workshop. Additionally, students will see the college-to-job pipeline connection in our Journey to the Future workshop, where they will explore how their college plans connect with potential careers. Beyond professional development, students will also be able to identify community issues personally important to them and understand their potential role as changemakers in the Civic Engagement workshop. These, among several other workshops, will put students on track towards being well-rounded citizen-scholars of the world.

Edu-Futuro’s STEM program is an interactive and engaging program for students in grades 4th-12th. This program features many fields within STEM such as medical science, artificial intelligence, mathematical coding and more! The program features different STEM topics/fields each week where we’ll discuss what the field is and how it affects our daily living, unique professions that students can explore, and problem solving by talking about ethical problems that impact the field. We are excited to have the minds of the future join us today and explore the amazing world that is STEM!

Digital Citizenship Tips and Advice for Families Help Kids Spot Fake News and Decode Media Messages

"With so much media and information coming at us through the television, phones, social media, and more, it's more important than ever for kids to understand the basics of media literacy. When kids can identify different types of news and media and the methods and meanings behind them, they're on their way to being critical thinkers and smart consumers."

Digital Citizenship Tips and Advice for Families Help Kids Fight Cyberbullying and Other Mean Online Behavior

"Most kids will encounter mean behavior at some point in their digital lives. For some kids, this experience is a blip that's easily forgotten, while for others it can have deep, long-lasting effects. For parents, the key is staying involved in kids' lives -- both online and off -- so they can step in and offer help if necessary. With guidance from parents and educators, kids can learn how to dodge the drama and stand up for others."

Happy 100th Day of School!

It’s Time for 2022-23 Kindergarten Registration

Do you have a child that turns five years old by September 30, 2022? If so, first determine if your child lives in the Mosaic Elementary School boundary by viewing the FCPS boundary locator. If your student does live in the Mosaic Elementary School boundary, please fill out the new student registration intake form. Your form will be submitted to Jenny Davisson, our school's Student Information Assistant, who will assist you with the next steps in the registration process.

Current Student's Intention Form for the Next School Year

A blue Student's Intention form was sent home in your child's Wednesday folder last week. Please complete the form for each child you have at Mosaic ES and return to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. This information is important for the following reasons: staffing is based on enrollment and state regulations require that we determine the educational intentions of students leaving FCPS. Thank you!

Digital Citizenship Tips and Advice for Families

Help Kids Make Friends and Interact Safely Online

"Soon after kids start reading and writing, they often begin interacting with others online. Whether they're chatting within games or texting family members, kids need the skills to interact respectfully. These skills will help kids -- and the people they're communicating with -- have positive experiences online."

Digital Citizenship Tips and Advice for Families

"When kids start to go online, whether they're playing multiplayer games, using educational apps, or just following their curiosity on Google, it's important that they understand the basics of online privacy and safety. With some general guidelines around what information is and isn't OK to share, and some help from parents when they're unsure, kids can have fun and learn a lot in the digital world."

Show Your School Some Love Next Week

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is declaring February 8 "We Love FCPS Day." Join us in the celebration. Show your love for your school by dropping off a handmade card to the FCPS employee who has made a difference in your student’s life this year.

Students in Mrs. Hopkins class are working with partners to learn about shadows.

Digital Citizenship Tips and Advice for Families

"From phones and tablets to streaming movies and YouTube, tech and media are everywhere. Kids love easy access to shows, games, and information. Parents and caregivers love that kids can learn on the go (and stay busy when dinner's cooking). But it's easy to overdo it when the phone never stops pinging and the next episode plays automatically. Families can keep media and tech use in check by following a few simple practices."
